Tomorrow is A.J.'s birthday party and sleepover, and I'm so unmotivated to finish up cleaning a few things (bathrooms? *sigh*). I think everything is in order for tomorrow morning: we'll run a few errands (pick up the cake, balloons, etc.), and then have a quick lunch of sandwiches before his guests begin arriving.

About 2pm tomorrow, my day will get crazy. And it won't slow down until 10am the next day - yikes!
navygreen: (Birthday!)
It's a really nice feeling when folks call to RSVP and make sure to completely "Wow!" over how nice the invitations look. It's heartwarming, and it makes me feel good, as I did put a lot of work into the invites.

A.J.'s birthday sleepover will be in two weeks, and his invites will be mailed out today. I've been hard at work, tracking down his intended guest list by phone to snag their home addresses to send the invitations. Because he is having a sleepover, we wanted to keep the list much smaller. And you're not allowed to bring invitations to school unless you're inviting the entire class, so we had to find another way to distribute the cards. He's super-excited about hosting his first big sleepover, and in just talking with the parents, it looks as if we have three definites (including two girls!), plus two that will stay until bedtime, then leave for home.

Jack's birthday party will be in four weeks, and the guest list is enormous! We worked hard at the end of school to get information from all the kiddos in his class, and it has paid off. We've invited his kindergarten classmates (the school year ended about a month ago now) by mail, a few of his indoor soccer buddies, his entire outdoor soccer team (the season ended two weeks ago), his entire summer school class (the program just ended yesterday, so he took these invites to school and handed them out), as well as several other family friends. Most of the invitations will be mailed, but from just the dozen or so he gave out in summer school on Thursday, he now has eight RSVP's already! Good thing I was expecting this party turnout to be BIG, right?!

Their birthday celebrations are being bumped up this year, since both of their birthdays are actually in August. Jack's birthday is the 9th, falling just three days before the first day of school. If we did a party on his birthday (Saturday), it would be hard to catch folks, as that's the last weekend for school shopping, last-minute summer vacations, etc. A.J.'s birthday is the 23rd, and that's no better. School is already in session, and everyone is getting so busy by then, including ourselves. Plus, to give the parents enough notice, we practically have to send home invites on the first day of school. Maybe it's just me, but I consider that kinda tacky. A couple years ago, we waited an extra month into school, having A.J.'s party in mid-September, but I've always felt badly for making him wait so long. So this year, we just decided to bump things up a bit and have true summer birthdays (which both of their birthdays *should* be - stupid school calendar).

But even that was easier said than done. Our high school reunion is the 26th of July, and we'll be in West Virginia for that. We're planning on leaving the 19th, and won't be back until the 31st. A.J. is in summer camp from the 13th-18th, and I really didn't want him to miss Jack's party, either (brothers are supposed to be there, you know?). So Jack's party is the 12th of July (almost a month early). And A.J.'s couldn't be the week prior because 1) it's 4th of July weekend, and people will be all over the place, and 2) it's the weekend of Buglet's birthday, as well as [livejournal.com profile] marshmelococoa's visit. So A.J.'s celebration is the 28th-29th of June instead - almost two full months early!

See, there's reasoning behind my madness. ;-)

My boys are so easy to put to bed. Hug, kiss, goodnight, turn off the lights, shut the door - done! I love that.

Jack and I are planning to eat lunch with A.J. at school tomorrow. It's actually kind of pathetic that this is now his fourth year at the elementary school (K-3), but I've never thought to do this before. On the menu for tomorrow is hot dogs, so I'm sure we'll all enjoy our lunch.

I've got a small checklist of things to get done here in the office tonight, and I'm going to put it down here to keep myself motivated:
  • Add dental appointments to day planner (I just remembered that they are still listed on cards on the fridge)

  • File music CDs we purchased on vacation into our collection (they've already been put into iTunes)

  • Fill out cell phone rebate form and ready it for the mail

  • Download pictures from A.J.'s birthday party

  • Finish uploading screencaps from "Snakes On a Plane (Bring It)" music video

  • File paperwork (bank and bill statements, ATM receipts)

  • Write repair form to Canon

  • Put up a new Underground Lake editorial

That should keep me fairly busy, I think. :-)

Edited to add: Everything is done now, so I've taken out the strikes. :-)
navygreen: (Birthday!)
I tried baking more Apple Spice Drops today. I actually checked the current weather forecast before doing so, and I decided to go ahead with it, even with the current humidity at 56%. The cookies still weren't perfect, but they were SO much better than the last time. Enough that I went ahead and made the apple frosting, even.

I've done three loads of laundry today and straightened up a bit. A.J. and Jack have been playing with A.J.'s new birthday toys today. The Lite Brite® seems to be a big hit (I used to love those things when I was younger!). af_cop Philip took A.J. to the BX and to Target to use his gift cards, and he picked out what he wanted. It was nice to have a quiet house while I was baking and folding, too.

A.J.'s party yesterday was wonderful. We had the entire pool for just his party - that was unexpected, but nice. It was only just above 70°, so I'd not taken my suit to swim, but Philip got in with the boys. hetterrific Heather swam as well, and she and Philip both said that the water was great - who knew it would be okay with such a low temperature? The kids had fun, and the cake was devoured - every last piece. A.J. received a bunch of neat toys and gift cards, and he was a very happy guy. Even though the clouds had looked ominous all day, the party turned out just right.

Heather is coming over to scrapbook tonight, and tomorrow begins the second week of school for A.J. He finished his homework on Friday afternoon, but I'm going to have him write out a few thank-you notes before bed tonight.
navygreen: (Elvis)
I dropped A.J. off at school this morning and came back home and tried to sleep a bit more. I shouldn't have even tried, as my rest was fitful and filled with sad thoughts instead.

I got up and got dressed. I got Jack dressed, and I woke Philip up. We took him to work, and then we ran a few errands. We ate lunch while we were out, and then we came home again. Jack received another birthday present in the mail - a Cars racetrack. We put that together and raced each other for half an hour or so before it was time to pick up Philip from work. We ran some more errands, and then I dropped him and Jack off at home. Philip began mowing the yard, and I went to pick up A.J. from school.

I dropped A.J. off at home, and he and Jack began racing each other. They haven't stopped since, in fact. :-) I went to Hallmark for some cards and to Nobbies to place the balloon order for A.J.'s party. I found some Hogwarts tattoos while I was there, and that cheered me up immensely. I'm dying to don my new Slytherin tattoo!

We're heading over to Ryan's (Philip's manager and friend from Runza) condo tonight to swim in their pool and cook out. They're grilling hot dogs and such, and we're bringing the ice. After swimming, we're heading out to Chris's house for some 4-wheelin'. The boys have never ridden 4-wheelers before, so I'll be taking the camera.

Speaking of cameras, I have to mail mine good one back to Canon tomorrow. I'm sad about that, but I am glad that they will be able to fix it.

And I've got a friend to see Snakes on a Plane with me on Thursday night now. I'm uber-excited about that. squeak_a_chu Heather2's husband Andy is going to go with me, and she's going to stay here at my house. The showing is at 10pm, and the boys go to bed at 9pm, so she'll have an easy time here, I'm sure. SoaP!

Wow, this entry really has its ups and downs, doesn't it?
navygreen: (Birthday!)
A.J.'s party has now been set. He will be having a swimming party at the Base Pool on Aug. 19th. The staff worked with me on some of my concerns (the regular party hours seemed so LATE!), and now I'm very pleased and also got a heckuva deal! I can't wait!

Two parties in exactly two weeks. It sounds about right, considering that the boys' birthdays are exactly two weeks apart. Still, we're going to be so sick of birthday cake around here!
navygreen: (A.J.)
The thunder is being really rumbly outside right now, so I really hope that the power doesn't go out in the middle of my writing this...

Today we celebrated A.J.'s birthday with his bowling party at Leopard Lanes. Yes, his birthday was 26 days ago, and yes, today was actually af_cop Dad's birthday, but well... that's just the way things worked out. A.J. decided a while back that he wanted to go bowling for his birthday because he was really, really wanting Dad to be there, and bowling is one sport that Dad really likes to do. However, we've still got some time before Dad is due back home, and we just didn't want to wait that much longer for A.J.'s big bash.

So again, his party was today at Leopard Lanes here in Bellevue. He gave out Madagascar party invitations to his entire class on Tuesday, and the party was this afternoon at 1:30pm. He was so excited! A.J. had only been bowling one time before, and that was almost 3 years ago when we were visiting Grammy and Papa George in West Virginia. He was Jack's age then, basically. And of course, Jack had never been bowling before, so he was practically bouncing off the walls to get going.

hetterrific Heather called this morning around 9am. She was at Wal*Mart and she checked to see if A.J.'s cake happened to be ready (it wasn't due to be until 11am). It was, so the boys and I headed out the door (already dressed, bathed and showered by that time - amazing for a Sunday morning since we usually laze around and go to the 11am service) and went to pick up the cake. While we were there, we picked up some candy, some more things for the goodie bags and some socks - in case anyone forgot to wear socks and needed a pair for their bowling shoes. By the time we got there, Heather was pretty much done with her shopping and she checked out while we were finishing up. We all then decided to have breakfast at IHOP next door (and we took the cake inside so it wouldn't melt in the car), and we were there for a good while.

After breakfast, we came home and A.J. and I sat at the dining room table and assembled the goodie bags (nothing like waiting until the last minute, right?). Each Madagascar baggie contained the following: four kinds of assorted chocolate candy, a noisemaker, a sheet of stickers, a wobble penguin, a trading card, a character straw, a finger bowling pin game (ten little pins and two marbles packed in adorable little cases!) and an animal koosh®-y thing. Each guest also received a plastic Madagascar cup to keep (we had themed disposable ones for the party). We packed everything up nicely and made two extra goodie bags and cups for surprise guests - just in case. We had a big inflatable palm tree to blow up (Madagascar has beaches, after all - don't believe me? Just look at the picture!), so I loaded up my vacuum cleaner into the van so that I could use it to blow up the tree once we got to the bowling alley. The boys then helped to load everything else into the car. I grabbed the ice cream last thing, and then we were off to Nobbies to pick up the balloons.

We ran in quickly to grab the balloons (already paid for - nice and fast!), and then we were finally on our way to the bowling alley. The party planner had told me I could come in at 1pm and start setting up, but we arrived at 12:30, and they went ahead and let us in. I started by blowing up the palm tree, and Heather arrived and joined me right about that time. She set to work on the streamers, and I put A.J. in charge of making a place setting for each of his guests. Speaking of guests, they started trickling in a bit early just about then.

A.J. was in heaven. As it turns out, we did have a surprise guest, so I was glad that I had made an extra goodie bag or two. I'd only met one of A.J.'s friends before, but all of the rest were so nice and so well-behaved. And I was especially glad when A.J.'s new friend - the boy we just met at the park on Friday evening - did indeed show up for the party! (We invited him on a whim while at the park fishing, told his mom the location and time of the party, and then had to leave, barely knowing each other's names, even!) Altogether, A.J.'s guests were these kids: Christopher, Shelby, Jade, Christian, Derek, Angelica, Drew, Michael and, of course, Jack. :-)

Heather was in charge of getting the food and drinks for everyone in the party, and I made small-talk with the kids in the meantime. We had a bag of miniature candy as well, and the kids had no problems scarfing several pieces of that down while waiting on their sodas and hot dogs or chicken nuggets. starrchld Annie arrived a bit before the food was ready, and then she helped to shuffle things back and forth get shoes for the kids while they were eating.

When the "lunch" food was gone, it was time for cake and ice cream!

A.J. looks at his cake while we sing 'Happy Birthday' to him.

Once everyone was finished, we cleared the party table and A.J. began opening some of his gifts while Heather helped the kids to get the right size bowling shoes on. He was a very gracious in receiving his gifts, and I was so thankful that he made each guest really feel like they had picked out something wonderful for him (though they each really had!). He opened his friend Angelica's present first - she gave him some packs of Yu-Gi-Oh! cards, but she also included Madagascar lion masks for everyone at the party! What a cool gift!

A.J. dons his mask (while Jade and Angelica stand close by).

And I was so proud of him - he took the time to read each and every one of the cards he received before moving on the either the gift or the next thing. I think taking time for the cards always makes the giver feel a bit more special. :-)

Finally, it was time to BOWL! (Jack had been asking - no joke! - every minute, "Can I go bowl now, Mom?") Annie finished clearing the party room for me, and she helpfully loaded everything into my van before she had to leave. That was wonderful - we had to be out of the party room by 3pm so that another group could use it, but I needed to be out in the lanes with the kids. I divided the kids into two groups of five, and we bowled on the two bumper lanes. About half of the kids had bowled before; one even had his own shoes and bowling ball.

The bowling took some time, of course, but the kids seemed to absolutely LOVE playing the game. Some of the passes went so slowly down the lane that, even though they did knock down pins, the machines didn't register their turns. Oftentimes, one kid would get to roll the ball down the lane 3 or 4 times before the machine finally understood that their "2" turns were up, causing the kids to get more chances and more strikes than I ever could in a regular game with regular rules. *wink*

A.J. runs up for his second frame.

Though Jack was the youngest player by 3 years, he was the first one in the group to score a strike... and he got it the RIGHT way (many strikes were made throughout the game, but some of them were actually 2 or 3-roll strikes, meaning that the machines just weren't registering the light 'tap' of the kids' passes). He cried when he had to give up the ball after his first frame, but he was okay once I rubbed his back and explained to him that all the kids on his team would have to take turns each time and that he still had 9 turns left. He ended up bowling an even 100 for his very first game - I was quite impressed. Jack scored the highest on his team, and he was seconded by A.J. with a score of 98. On the other team, Christian topped the scores with a 118, while Christoper lagged behind just 1 point at 117 (and he's the one with his own ball). We lost 3 kids during the game because their parents had to take them home, but those that made it to the end seemed really happy with their games.

** Interesting tidbit: Though the bowling alley was called 'Leopard Lanes,' the things that come down to clear each lane had banners across them that read 'Cougar Lanes.' Hmmm...

And the parents could have been just telling me so to make me feel good, but several of them said their kid had just told them it was the "best party" they'd ever been to when I was thanking them for coming. I was so happy to hear that - altogether, this party was kinda thrown together at the last minute, but it seems that everyone enjoyed it just the same.

Even if they had to wait in between turns...

Jack waits patiently for his next turn.

*wink*

Crazy weather today, folks. I was glad to have run all the errands and played outside this morning because it was very cool and quite overcast - setting the day up for perfect afternoon naps. As I was finishing up at the computer by noon, the thunder was coming pretty quick. By the time I snuggled under the covers for a nap, it was raining pretty hard. When the alarm went off to wake me up, it was bright and sunshine-y again!

Crazy.

As for the seasons, my pal minivan_mom Jamie is dying for fall to arrive. On the other hand, I talked to my friend Ann on the phone this morning, and she isn't yet ready to let go of summer. As for me, I'm certainly ready for it to "look" like fall, but I'm not entirely sure I'm wanting the cooler temperatures just yet. I'm perfectly happy right now with fall coming in slowly. :-)

Yesterday morning when we left to drop Jack off at preschool, there was an orange-colored cat walking along the top of our courtyard fence. It looked pretty thin, and it mewed at me in a scared tone. Jack continued to buckle into his carseat, and I ran back in the house and filled a dish with kitty kibble and placed it under the carport dividing wall. Hours later, all I could see that had changed was that the food was then covered with ants. This morning, however, the food dish was completely empty - not ONE tiny morsel remained. Hmmm...

We dropped off the invitations with A.J.'s teacher promptly at 11am and then came straight back home. As I was driving down 34th street, a little weiner dog was walking slowly in the middle of the road. I came to a full stop and allowed it time to get to one side or the other, but it just wasn't interested in going anywhere. I thought it might be a dog I knew, so I turned on my hazard lights, got out of the car and called to it. As soon as I opened the door, though, the little dog sped off down Grand Forks avenue. I kept calling it, but all it did was bark and run further away every time I tried to speak to it, so I finally just got back in the car and came the last few blocks home. I looked up the folks in the phone book and called them to let them know, but there was no answer, so I left messages. :-/

And that's about when it started raining, too. A full-circle post, this is! :-D

Today is Picture Day at A.J.'s school. As such, I had planned to take Jack in as a visitor and have his picture taken as well. I had to wake up both boys 10 minutes earlier than usual, and I had to comb Jack's hair with a wet brush, too. (A.J.'s was fine straight out of bed - it usually is.) We arrived at the school at 7:52am and went inside right then. Normally, the doors don't open until 8:05, but the visitors were supposed to be photographed between 8-8:15. When we walked in, they were already set up, but there was no one in line at all! Jack was done in no time, and since there was no one else around, the photographer took 4 shots of him and let me choose the one I liked best from their computer - neat!

A.J. left us when the bell rang for him to head to class, and Jack and I were out of there by 8am ourselves. We drove over to hetterrific Heather's house to feed the kitties, and then we went to Wal*Mart to pick up some more invitations. We then had breakfast at Vidlak's Cafe, and we were back home by 9am. Jack played on the swingset while I sat at the picnic table and filled out invitations. We were outside for an hour. There was a cool breeze blowing this morning, and I finally had to move to the "shelter" of our swing and finish the rest. Then Jack helped me stamp all the envelopes - I'd found a cute set of three roller stamps: a lion, zebra and elephant, and they left pawprint tracks across the envelope. Jack thought that was so neat, and he experimented with curving the tracks and running the colors together.

Now we just have to wait until 11am to drop the invitations off to A.J.'s teacher during lunchtime. :-)
navygreen: (Kermit the Spaz)
The alarm went off this morning, and I went into the kitchen first thing to get a drink. Oddly enough, I happened to check the answering machine - something I *never* do in the morning because no one *ever* calls before 7:48am (the time that my alarm goes off). This morning, though, it was already blinking with one message.

I played the message, and it was Sara Zivny. She'd called at 7:25 to tell me that there actually wouldn't be childcare available this morning for the scrapbooking group due to the fact that the Monday morning Bible study didn't start until NEXT week. She asked me to contact the gals that had planned on coming.

*sigh*

I was really looking forward to that, but I can also understand waiting one more week and just starting everything together. I called niecer1 Janiece as I roused the boys and told her. I had to wait to call Jackie until after taking A.J. to school, as Janiece knew that she would be dropping off her daughter at the same time. And the way it worked out was actually much simpler: as Jack and I entered the house from dropping A.J. off, I heard Jackie in the middle of leaving a message for me. I snatched up the phone and caught her just in time. She was having to cancel herself because she had to take a kitty to the vet, and she was happy to hear that she would, in fact, NOT be missing the first meeting.

So I suppose it worked out okay, anyway. I wasn't able to reach Ann by telephone before school, and she was bummed to hear when I caught her at 9am, but we've all got time to be get more ready for next week now. :-)

Since Janiece and I were still standing around, I asked her if she'd like to have breakfast with me at Panera Bread®. She thought that sounded good, and I agreed to drive us both there in my van. She headed back to get her purse out of her own van, and she returned back to me with a gorgeous bunch of flowers and a card for mine and af_cop Philip's anniversary! I was very touched and quite surprised! :-)

We had a nice long breakfast and didn't return back to the preschool until shortly before time to pick our boys up. Afterwards, Jack and I went and paid the deposit for A.J.'s birthday party. We ate a late lunch then, and I talked to my my daddy for a while on the phone. I don't get to talk to him much, but he called last night as well, so I really felt spoiled to talk to him twice in two days!

We picked up A.J. from school, and then headed over to hetterrific Heather's to check on the kitties again. We've been watching them for the past 2+ days, and we'll continue to do so until her and Shane return home from their vacation in Montana. Tasha Lou has been a bad girl, though: she got out yesterday when Jack left the garage door open (he was heading to the basement to put food in the kitties' bowls, and I was bringing in Saturday's mail [which we forgot to do that day]). Then today, she jetted out the door as soon as I opened it to enter the house, and I had to chase her around the house and then over two backyards to grab her and bring her back in... and oh, she was NOT happy with me! I seriously feared for the survival of my wrists, as she kept trying to bite them while I carried her back.

I fully expect Heather to act as my nurse should I contract "cat scratch fever" now. ;-)

I pulled up the last zucchini plant from the garden today. We only planted two, but we've had an amazing run - 55+ zucchinis (I say 55, but starrchld Annie thinks I forgot a few and am understating), and 90% of them were between 14-18" long. Annie, her mom and I gathered the cornstalks on Saturday, and they are now decoratively adorning my carport posts and the little flag stand - cute! Annie also pulled up the bean skeletons that day, so now there are only the pepper plants and the tomato bush left in our big garden space, but both of them are still going strong (the peppers a little too much so, in fact).

I just got out of the bath (yes, [livejournal.com profile] marshmelococoa, I took a bath tonight from your suggestion last night) and shower, and I'm going to go finish up A.J.'s party invitations while my hair dries a little bit. I might start a movie, but I doubt that I'll finish one. Oh, and speaking of movies, I borrowed Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights from Heather yesterday, and I watched it while the boys took naps after church. It was AWFUL. I absolutely H.A.T.E.D. it, and I was quite surprised at that. In fact, after I watched it, I sat there and stewed about how awful it was for about 20 minutes, and then I finally decided that the only way to get the awfulness out of my mind would be to watch the original Dirty Dancing movie. So I did just that. I pulled out my old VHS movie and watched it - ahhhh! MUCH better.

Alrightee, I'm off...
navygreen: (A.J.)
After picking A.J. up from school yesterday afternoon, he had an assignment to finish: decide where he wanted to eat out for his special birthday dinner. From a long list of available choices I gave him, he picked Outback Steakhouse. I admit, I was surprised but very happy with his choice - it had been a looooong time since we'd eaten there. :-)

We met hetterrific Heather at 5:00pm. Since A.J.'s party won't be until the middle of September (just too much crammed into all the weekends between now and then), we wanted to go ahead and give him the gifts we had, plus the gifts from our moms.

The restaurant was not crowded yet because of the early dinner time, and that was a nice thing. It did take a while longer than expected for our food to come out, but our waitress was so nice and friendly. Right from the get-go, the staff knew that it was A.J.'s birthday - it was kinda hard to MISS that fact, what with Heather and I walking in under PILES of presents. ;-)

The boys suckered a different waitress into giving them both TWO animals filled with crayons. A.J. played with his platypus and alligator while Jack banged his shark and bird around. But don't the platypus and the alligator look eerily related? ;-)

A.J. had a 'Boomerang Cheeseburger and Aussie Chips,' and Jack chose 'Kookaburra Chicken Fingers and Aussie Chips.' I had the Queensland salad, but I didn't pay attention to the description underneath; I was expecting a grilled breast of chicken atop salad greens, and instead I had ordered a seasoned chicken salad. It was okay, but it wasn't what I was wanting.

When everyone was finished eating (which nearly KILLED A.J. and Jack to wait for us to finish a decent amount of food, by the way), it was time for A.J. to begin opening his presents. The folks around us got pretty tired of the camera flashes, I'm sure, but hey - you only turn 7 once!

A.J. really gets into opening his gifts!
