navygreen: (School)
Oh man, I am so tired tonight! I went to bed around 4am this morning, and then I woke up at 8 to get ready to volunteer at Jack's school. Once there, I copied, cut, pasted, and laminated my heart out! I was absolutely famished by the time lunch rolled around. For once, I actually finished all of my lunch tray before Jack or his friends finished theirs!

I stayed for an extra hour after lunch to finish up a project for Jack's teacher, and then I braved both the commissary and the Youth Center in the cold. I got Jack registered for this year's indoor soccer season, and then I stopped by A.J.'s school (which had just let out and loaded buses) for a quick chat with one of his teachers. They were all in a meeting, however, so I'll have to catch them tomorrow, I suppose.

This evening, I was starting to brown the hamburger meat for chili when I smelled something... off. I followed my nose to the basement, where we found one of the litterboxes to be quite full of pee. Cleaning the litter is one of A.J.'s daily chores, and I think he had been skimming it for a while. Ick! I rarely go into the basement/playroom except to do laundry, so this led to an entire family event: a "game night" consisting of deep-cleaning the basement from top-to-bottom. I ran upstairs a few times to add things to the chili, and when we finally finished, we had a warm, hearty meal waiting for us. Because of the later hour, I think we were all especially silly at the dinner table, too!

I'm turning in early tonight. Actually, this is super-early for me... before midnight, even!
navygreen: (Christmas - Coke lights)
Once again, it is just gorgeous out today, and we're going to head into town and get some things knocked off our list because of it. The weather is supposed to be all snow-and-doom-and BLIZZARD for the next few days afterward, so today is probably my one chance to get the car washed for the next couple months or so.

(Yes, it will get dirty again from the snow, but the point is that it still has to be cleared off SOME in-between all the months of snowy weather. Plus, I have a white coat, and I have to be very careful getting in/out of the car.)

We're going to head to Hobby Lobby and see the sales, and then the boys are dying to get to Walmart and spend their Christmas cash which is hot in their pockets. We'll also swing by Hallmark and grab some thank-you notes for all of us. Let me tell you, there are lots of holiday thank-yous to be written for the many blessings this past weekend!

We might get to meet up with my friends Jan and Dawn, as well as their kids, for dinner at Ground Round, too. We all live on base, but we'll all be doing the errand thing in town, and we're all planning on dinner while we're down there. Philip and I went there once for a lunch date, but the boys have never been. It should be fun!
navygreen: (Fall: leaf)
Well, we were supposed to have roast tonight for dinner. I planned it this way so that we could have the resulting leftover beef stew tomorrow night - an easy dinner after Jack's first soccer game of the season. However, when I pulled the chunk of meat out of the fridge at 2pm for searing, it was still a solidly frozen block. Drat.

Instead, it's back in the fridge for more thawing time (though it already had two days!), and tonight I've bumped up a meal from later on in the week: goulash, broccoli, and cottage cheese. Just a bit ago, I was standing in the kitchen, wondering what to do with myself. It was still a little early to prep dinner, but I really wanted to be in there. So... I whipped up a batch of fudge brownies, and now they're in the oven. We'll have them for dessert tonight.

Today, I updated the boys' book lists, paid all our bills, entered all Coke points into the system, cleared my desk and the bar (paper "hot spots" in this house), dropped off a prescription, shopped a short list at the commissary, stopped in and had lunch with Jack at his school, chatted for over an hour with [livejournal.com profile] bigbrain61 on the phone, filled the prescription, and put away the groceries. Believe it or not, that was ALL before noon! By the time I was done with all of that, I laid down on the couch for a quick nap, and then I woke up when A.J. came in from school. Once Jack was also home, I loaded up the boys and headed to the barber shop. It's payday, as well as the day before Picture Day at the elementary school, so there was quite a lengthy wait. Finally, the boys were sheared, and then we did some birthday shopping for October.

I'm thinking about making some cookies in the next couple days, but they're just "test" subjects, so I haven't fully decided. I have one large order and two small orders to do in the next two weeks, and I still have several cookies I need to post (Facebook seems to get those pictures first, I guess).

It looked light it might rain today, and there was a chance of it, but it never happened. The weather should be nice and warm again tomorrow, though. I'm taking pictures of a newborn baby boy in the morning. (Well, it's scheduled, at least.) He'll be just ten days new, and I hope he's sleepy. His mama was very sweet when I met her at a surprise birthday party for my neighbor last Saturday. I'm excited, and I know she is as well. She understands that this is not really what I do, but she's willing to accept that with good faith!

I hope to pull out my fall decorations soon. I might do it this weekend. We're also discussing which weekends to look at for hanging lights. (When we lived in Alaska, he usually hung white lights on the roof in September. That way, we used them with orange lights for Halloween and later with more white lights for Christmas. Plus, he didn't have to be outside/climb on the roof in the bitter cold once winter and snow had come.) Philip is trying to either get leave or get someone to switch him a shift so that he can have the 24th off next Friday. The boys are out of school that day for inservice, and we're planning to go down to Bismarck for the day. We actually haven't been back to Bismarck since passing through it when we moved here!

Goodness, the brownies are smelling absolutely heavenly at the moment. I just pulled them from the oven, and I can't wait to have a fresh one in a little while! :-)
navygreen: (Time - Draco/Hermione)
At this time today, I was doing the following:

7:42am: turning off our alarm clock (for Philip to take A.J. to school)

8:42am: turning off our alarm clock (for me to take Jack to school)

8:50am: waiting for Philip to "style" Jack's hair (using lots of styling goo) for 'Crazy Hair Day' at his preschool

9:00am: dropping off Jack at preschool

9:10am: eating breakfast

9:20am: waking Philip up once again (he'd gone back to sleep while I was gone)

9:45am: making a pan of Scalloped Potatoes, and I peeled and cut up the leftover potatoes for Philip to make homemade french fries for lunch (and he was mowing the lawn at the time)

10:30am: popping the Scalloped Potatoes into the oven

10:35am: beginning to rake and seed the yard with grass with Philip

11:00am: walking into Target with Philip to buy a full-size rake (we'd been using just a hand-size rake, and it wasn't good enough)

11:15am: walking into Menard's for the rake (Target didn't have it)

11:33am: picking up Jack from preschool (rather, Philip went in and signed him out while I ended up chatting in the parking lot)

11:40am: pulling the freshly roasted Scalloped Potatoes out of the oven and beginning the preparations for Philip to grill burgers

11:50am: accepting cards from Marissa to mail for her later on with my own packages

12:05pm: begging Philip to start the grill because I was STARVING

12:20pm: seeding some more patches on the front lawn

12:35pm: sitting down to a lunch of grilled burgers and Scalloped Potatoes

1:00pm: cleaning up the lunch dishes and starting the dishwasher

1:18pm: telling an entranced Philip and Jack (they were playing a NASCAR game on the X-Box 360 together) that I was leaving for the post office and would be back soon

1:25pm: mailing my package and cards and buying stamps for both Marissa and myself

1:40pm: returning home to find Philip and Jack virtually unmoved

1:55pm: trying to find the last spot I'd read on my LiveJournal friends' list (back 250+ entries - yikes!)

2:10pm: working on the yard some more, filling in patches with seed while Philip raked them up for me

2:40pm: washing up and preparing to pick A.J. up from school

2:45pm: leaving

3:05pm: waiting on A.J. to walk to the van

3:15pm: reading through my cookbooks to find a good recipe for the Parents at Home potluck tomorrow morning (our last meeting of the year - *sniff*)

3:30pm: suddenly tearing up due to a horrible stinging/burning pain in the roof of my mouth/throat

3:45pm: coughing, gasping for breath and practically crying from the searing pain in my throat (and not understanding how it happened so suddenly)

3:50pm: taking some Motrin, spraying some numbing Chloraseptic on my throat and sucking on an expired cough drop, hoping desperately for the pain to subside

4:05pm: calling Marissa to cancel dinner plans (nearly crying while trying to talk)

4:25pm: feeling a bit better as the second cough drop finally managed to numb things up a tiny bit, though still wondering what the HECK happened so quickly

4:30pm: watering the new seed in the lawn before Philip left for work (our spigot is broken, and I needed him to turn on/off the water for me)

5:00pm taking another stab at reading a chunk of my friends' list

5:35pm: fixing some snacks for the boys

6:40pm: heading outside to do some more raking/seeding, boys "helping" this time around

7:35pm: coming inside because we had several raindrops fall on us

7:40pm: heating up dinner (leftovers and Scalloped Potatoes from earlier)

8:30pm: doing dinner dishes

9:05pm: tucking boys in bed

9:15pm: devoting some SERIOUS time to my friends' list, finally catching up and not skipping one SINGLE post (and commenting a heckuva lot, too!)

11:00pm: not answering the phone when Philip called (I did listen to him leave a message) because my throat hurts, and I didn't want to talk

11:01pm: calling him back to tell him that I did have the paper he needed

11:02pm: taking some more Motrin and popping another cough drop

11:05pm: beginning a post for today

And there you have it. I don't know how I've managed to get a sore throat so suddenly, but I'm almost thinking it has something to do with the grass seeding/raking today. It was really windy every time I was outside, and I'm afraid some of the stuff may have irritated my throat/sinuses.
navygreen: (Fred & George - next-door neighbors)
Today has been a non-stop whirlwind - since we woke up, that is. ;-)

Right at noon, while I was still snoozing lightly in bed, I woke up to the doorbell. It was a faint ring, and I wasn't even really sure I heard it. I laid there contemplating it for a little bit, and then at 12:03, I heard it again. Philip went to answer it (his pajamas are better suited for door-answering), and it was my friend Jan dropping off a bunch of stuff. She'd called earlier, but we'd slept right through that. And Jack was curled up asleep on the couch (Philip had taken A.J. to school and then come back home and gotten back in bed hours before). Jack had a stuffy nose yesterday, so I wasn't too surprised at that this morning.

So I got up for the day then. I paid a bunch of bills online, but I never allowed myself to even check LiveJournal, as I had tons of things that I wanted to get done today first. Philip finally got up as well about an hour later, and then I told him some of the errands I wanted to run. He and Jack got dressed, Jack ate a hot dog quickly and then we got going. We went to the one bank first, took money out and then put it into another bank (yes, we really do that sometimes). We dropped off a few more items at the church for their garage sale, and then I ran into the preschool for a bit to chat with Jack's teachers while there were no students. We ended up talking for half an hour or so, and Philip had to come in and drag me out!

We drove to Nebraska Furniture Mart to pay our bill, and then we raced back to pick up A.J. from school. After doing so, we grabbed a quick (but late!) bite to eat: I had Subway, and Philip and the boys had Burger King (though the boys just split an order of fries and had ICEEs). We got stuck in traffic at the base gate on our way in (a delivery truck had to be turned around to enter a different gate), and then we dropped Philip off for his Flight Chiefs meeting while the boys and I headed to the commissary for our grocery shopping. We ran into hetterrific Heather while there, but she only needed a few things so we chatted for just a tiny bit. We were just over halfway through with our shopping when Philip grabbed me around my waist as I picked out packages of ground beef (and scared the crap out of me!). He'd walked over after his meeting, and we all finished our shopping together. We came home then, and Philip took the boys to the park (and Jack rode his bike all the way there and back) while I put away all the groceries and repackaged the meat for freezing. I also gathered up all the trash and reorganized the freezer.

They came back promptly at 6:45pm, and I was finishing up the meat. We all piled in the car and headed to Great Clips for A.J. to get a haircut. While Philip had the boys in there, I went to Hallmark to buy cards for Mother's Day (yes, I realize they might not make it in time - I almost forgot!). The boys finished up about the same time I did, and then we all headed to Menard's for some garden stuff. We bought some peat moss, grass seed, garden gloves, black tarpy stuff and some other miscellaneous stuff. Once we were done there, we headed to Famous Dave's for dinner.

It was after 9:15pm by the time we were done, and that was late for us already (the boys usually go to bed at 9pm), but we still needed to get to Wal*Mart. We had to buy birthday gifts for our niece (which have to be mailed out tomorrow), and we also needed a gift for a birthday party the boys are attending on Friday. We picked those things out and then - finally! - came back home. Philip dunked the boys in the tub for a super-fast bath while I vacuumed the living room before his friends came over to play X-Box. We tucked the boys in bed, and then I set to work packaging the chicken I'd not been able to get done earlier.

Philip is now playing with his buddies, and I'm about to hop in the shower. My feet are killing me, but I want to get that done, and then I'll be back to check in on my friends' list for today. If I'm lucky, y'all didn't write much while I was gone all day... but I doubt that! ;-)
navygreen: (Jack - tired)
For starters, ER is a new episode tonight. Thank goodness, as otherwise it would have been four weeks since the last new episode, and that's too dang long!

I was so beat today, just as I feared that I would be. I watched Elizabethtown from Netflix last night while making the baptismal letters, and I stopped the movie to take a shower at 1am or so. I finally crawled into bed at 3:16am, and then I got up again at 7:50 to take A.J. to school. The boys were tired too, it seems, as they were both still sound asleep at that time (and they're usually already running around). Jack was still asleep even when I got back from taking A.J., but he did wake up a few minutes later.

He and I ate some breakfast quickly, and then we got ready to leave ourselves. He's always so excited for playtime on Thursdays while I'm at the Parents at Home group. I signed him in, went to the copy room to drop off the baptismal letters, and then I walked across the street to the youth building for our meeting to start. Today's theme was "Wellness Day." We had devotions with music and then tips on walking, and then we finally set out for our walk. We walked all over the Quail Creek area, and most of it was over some really long, really tough hills. I was so sweaty by the time we finally got back to the church an hour later! I picked Jack, and then we came home a bit early so that Philip could make it to Runza by 11am.

I took a short shower as soon as we came inside and redressed in fresh clothing. I had run the dishwasher and thawed some chicken for lunch while we were gone, so I made a quick lunch of chicken tacos for us. Afterwards, Jack snuggled in on the couch, and I laid down for a nap as well. Philip woke me up at 2:40pm, and then Jack and I left to pick A.J. up from school and head straight to their dentist appointments. Both boys were perfectly well-behaved on their own, and I stayed in the waiting room the entire time. Jack has a heriditary, tiny dent in one of his incisors, and he'll go back in June to have it sealed. It's a baby tooth, yes, but it's one he's not due to lose until he's 9-10 years old, and that's pretty far away.

We came home and grabbed our shopping list, and then the boys and I set out again. We ate an early dinner at Ruby Tuesday, and we were done by 6pm. We then went to Sears to replace Jack's jeans. He'd finally worn a hole through them in the knee today. I'd never heard of that before, but when I bought these jeans two months ago, the cashier went on for five full minutes about their clothing guarantee program, and it boils down to this: if the jeans wear out before the child outgrows them - no matter what kind of wear & tear it is - they are replaced free. So we walked in there with torn jeans, and walked back out with brand-new. Pretty cool. After that errand, we went to the commissary to pick up the items on our shopping list. It was 6:40, and I thought that the commissary closed at 7pm, so we really booked it through our short list and were done before then (though I found out that they don't close until 8pm). I put some gas in the car on the way back. We came home, unloaded the groceries, I started a new load of bedding in the washer, and we all went outside to play until just a few minutes ago.

The boys are in the tub now, and I'm going to go make sure everything is ready for bed. I'm sure we'll all sleep well tonight, but I bet I crash before I get fully under the covers myself. ;-)
navygreen: (Harry - *grin*)
Well, today was even busier than I'd thought it would be. Philip had an impromptu meeting called at 1:30, and I had to leave Jan's house with both Jack and Cole in tow in just a minute's notice. I felt awful leaving her a note, but I didn't have any other choice. Thankfully, we dropped off Philip at the base and returned back to Jan's house just minutes after she arrived home herself... so she hadn't really had to wait much.

A.J.'s parent/teacher conference went very well - he scores 97% or above in every single subject or area. He's reading at 87wpm (reading a paragraphed story during a timed test), and that's a significant improvement over his 61wpm during an assessment at the beginning of the year... and that was already "advanced" level! Jack sat very quietly in the chair next to A.J. during the conference, and that was amazing in itself - usually he's jumping to be the center of attention. Somebody dropped Philip off at the school to meet us, but we ran into him as we were coming out of the school after the conference. He dropped us all off at home and then was off to work. Finally, the day slowed down.

The boys and I had various leftovers for dinner (meatballs, cottage cheese, carrots, grapes), and the fridge is pretty much cleaned out now. That was my goal, as I'm planning to make a turkey dinner tomorrow night. The boys are excited about the sweet potatoes the most, I think. I bought a small turkey breast yesterday at the commissary on a whim, and we'll celebrate St. Patrick's Day with that instead of the traditional corned beef. I'm not a huge beef fan, and I haven't a clue how to even prepare corned beef anyway. Turkey is easy, and we'll all sleep well, too!

I just tried calling Philip at work (something I don't do terribly often, I should add) to remind him to inquire about some paperwork we're waiting on (veterans' bonuses, etc.), but he wasn't available right then. He's off "pulling an exercise." I swear, it's almost ridiculous how much fun he has working nights up at STRATCOM. He runs exercises all the time, and what that really translates to is this: he pretends to be a bad guy (he prefers that to being the good guy) and runs all over pretending to be a threat to security. They pretend their radios are guns, etc.

He's still such a kid. :-)
navygreen: ('Affairs' - recap)
I love reading my LJ in the morning. It is so relaxing, and it's such a nice way to ease into the day over breakfast (a glass of milk and orange wedges).

*slow, happy sigh*

Today promises to be rather busy for a while. I'm heading off to the Parents at Home group this morning, and Jack will be playing at the church during that time. We're making lunches for the Open Door Mission this morning, so I've got my sack o' supplies ready by the front door now. Speaking of supplies, it's surprising how inexpensive making lunches sounds and yet how much it really does cost. I've got the following for my lunches:
  • loaf of bread

  • jar of peanut butter

  • jar of red raspberry jam

  • mints

  • peach cups

  • plastic spoons

  • sandwich bags

  • napkins

  • lunch sacks

It really begins to add up after a bit. Still, it's a nice thing to do, and I'm sure the Mission really appreciates our support. I'll have to leave the group a bit early this morning to get back home in time to pick up Philip and drop him off at Runza for a few hours. While he's doing that, Jack and I are heading over to Jan's house to watch Cole for about an hour or so. I'll be feeding them lunch at her house, and I really hope I don't have problems getting into their house through the garage - eep.

After that, we'll head back to pick up Philip, and then he'll get ready for work. He's got a meeting at 3:15, so we'll be dropping him off immediately after picking A.J. up at school, and then I'll be heading back to the school at 4pm for A.J.'s spring parent/teacher conference. Hopefully, that will be it for the day, and then we'll be back home.

Whew! It's not a whole lot, but it's enough to keep this mama hopping for the next eight hours!
navygreen: (Christmas - ornaments)
I hope you're having a wonderful Christmas Eve!

The baklava I just bought (and cracked open on the way home!) doesn't expire until 6/13/06.

Wow. That's mildly unsettling, that is. Still, it's sooooo good.

Wal*Mart was really not that bad today. We dropped off Philip at Runza, filled up the van with gas, went to WallyWorld, bought our twelve things and returned home in less than an hour. I am happy with that.

I did three loads of laundry between 11pm and 3am last night, so our clothes are good to go. I'm washing our bedding right now, and I'll probably wash the boys' tomorrow while they're playing with new toys and things. They'll sleep on them the one night, but then the bedding will still be pretty fresh when we return home again.

I'm off to make sandwiches for lunch and then start some cookies for Santa. We're heading to church at 3pm, so there will still be plenty of time to finish things up for Mr. Claus later on, too. :-)
navygreen: (Christmas - dino w/ cart)
The boys and I ran around some today while af_cop Philip slept. We didn't get a whole lot to show for it, though. I bought gift cards at Menards for the two men in the church that helped me so much with the yard this summer, and I found nice Christmas/thank-you cards to put them in. I also bought all of the new award/medal ribbons that Philip earned while he was away. He intends to wear his dress blues in church while we're back home, and his medals needed to be updated before doing so. I tried to return some pajamas that I bought just yesterday (holy cow - what was I thinking?! These pants are almost twice the size I needed!) at Wal*Mart, but after seeing the major chaos that was the parking lot, I just went on to the next errand. I am going to brave it tomorrow morning, but I won't have the boys with me then, so waiting in a returns line shouldn't be as bad as it would have been with them today.

I've paid bills and gotten everything ready for our trip home. Philip got a surprise last night and found out that he will be off tomorrow night - yay! We're going to the 3pm Christmas Eve service at church, and then we'll just relax the rest of the day/night. Relax - ha! I'm sure I'll find a bazillion-and-one things to do, seeing as how I can't get my mind out of "trip" mode even for one second.

We received nine more Christmas cards in the mail today, including one from [livejournal.com profile] amberlovely. The rest of the cards were ALL from West Virginia - that was a strange coincidence. I put them up and took a new count on the 'Card Wall' - as of this moment, we have 85 lovely holiday cards! I was hoping for 75, so I'm very happy with all the postal love! I won't take them down on the 26th this year due to our leaving, but I will take pictures of the final 'Card Wall' when we return home in January. :-D
