navygreen: (School)
I called up the boys' old school in Nebraska this afternoon for a few things. We'd ordered and paid for classroom pictures back in the fall, and at the time we moved, the composites were not yet created or printed. I wanted to make sure that we were still on tap to get them, and also to give the school our new address.

In addition, I wanted to make sure that we didn't miss out on these yearbooks. Especially for A.J., as these have been his classmates since kindergarten, and I really wanted him to have this special last memento. I ordered both of them, and the check then went out in today's mail. I spoke with the PTA gal in charge of the yearbooks, and she's excited about the pictures I'm emailing her. I had lots of pictures from many events this past fall: chaperoning the 2nd grade zoo trip, the Activity Center Family Night, the fall carnival, and the Halloween parties. I'm happy she can use so many in the yearbook. :-)

We miss the old school (it was our "home" six and a half school years!), but there are bright, wonderful things going on at the boys' new school, too. Their new elementary plans many more family activities - there's constantly something going on. This past Saturday, we woke early and all attended a Pancake Breakfast to kick-off the book fair and conference week. The boys both chose M&M pancakes, but Philip and I had plain ones. (M&Ms in maple syrup?!) The boys each picked out four books from the fair, and I flipped through several cookbooks, tempted.

They both had their conferences yesterday afternoon, and the news was just wonderful. You really just can't ever get tired of hearing teachers tell you your children are so incredibly bright, you know? Jack's teacher has run out of reading curriculum for him in the classroom, and she was recommending extra books and texts that are located in A.J.'s 6th grade classroom. (When we went to A.J.'s room for the second conference, Jack grabbed a recommended book from the shelf and sat quietly reading it at an empty desk. He almost made it through Chapter Two!) He's really enjoying cursive writing, and his teacher seemed amazed that his cursive handwriting is better than his left-handed printing. He's in the advanced reading club for the library, as well as the higher math club at the end of each school day.

A.J. is thriving as well. With the new methods of teaching and extensive testing, his teacher was amazed that he absorbs so much information without ever taking notes. Sometimes she doubts whether he's really paying attention, but she said he can always, always answer the question or recall what she has just said - even if his nose had been in a book just two seconds before. He's getting better about keeping his desk more organized (in his years of messy desks, I've never been able to understand how he can stand it. Now, however, he's straightening up, and it's great preparation for middle school next year when he changes classes every period.) His test scores are good, and he was very proud of his two most recent book reports (which were on display in the classroom).

We couldn't have been more proud! :-)

Also, last Friday, the 2nd grade classes invited parents to attend a small music concert highlighting many of the concepts and techniques they've learned. It was a lot of fun, and Jack was again one of the tallest students. (He's always on the back bleachers, I swear!)

A few videos from the concert. )

Also, I'm surrounded by school pictures. Their last school took them each year in the fall, and then they created a composite class picture for each room. We ordered those, but I hadn't mailed them out yet. (I had intended to include them with our change-of-address and holiday newsletter mailings, but I never wrote those items.) This new school did the same in the fall, but they also took spring pictures just last week, as well as an actual classroom photo (the kids standing next to one another), and we received those pictures at their conferences. Now, we hadn't realized that they would take individual pictures again (the school only sent home forms about the class photo), so we took the boys for updated professional pictures at the mall. Now I have ALL of these photos to mail out at the same time - eeep!

We took the boys to get new pictures taken last Tuesday night. It had been over 2.5 years since their last sitting (not including the lifestyle portraits that [livejournal.com profile] marshmelococoa took almost two years ago, too), so it was definitely time to get updated ones in our frames.

There was a snafu with the online gallery, so I only finally was able to see the pictures this morning. I ordered in the studio, but I had been wanting to share them. Yay!

Jack - 8.5 years, A.J. - 11.5 years

Of course, the real images will be correctly centered and most of them are cropped in as well. They won't be tiny and blurry, either. I can't wait to pick them up next week!

More. )

Well, they're done!

[livejournal.com profile] marshmelococoa has finished all of our pictures, and I want to share them with all of you. There's not an easy way to see them, but I would *love* to hear your comments and feedback on ALL of them. There are so many good ones, and I don't know how to narrow them down for ordering next week!

Go here: https://www.photogassistant.com/photogas/PAT_Gallery.php

You'll need to register to see them, but you won't be spammed or anything, I'm sure. You will need an access code and your password to enter.

In addition to the other pic, Heidi and I had discussed in my own picture-taking how much I'm currently enjoying 'edge' shots (what I call a photo where the subjects are right on the edge of the photo, with all the scenery and such filling the rest).

And then she gave me one!

I love her, I really do. Everyone needs a Heidi. *nods*

But I can't help it! And, I'm sure you'll agree - the extra two pics she gifted each of us with today are SOOOOO good!

I've gotta share the pics in separate entries, though, for I can't figure out how to blog them from her Flickr account otherwise. So, there you go: the first one from today. I've got a feeling Heidi shared that one purposely, knowing how much I *love* walking shots. Isn't it great?!

I'm *dying* to see more!

She arrived here on Thursday, July 3rd, and she left after lunch on Sunday, July 6th. In those few days, she was a whirlwind of work! She had our session at the lake the night she arrived, Heather's little family the next morning, plus she took candid shots of the big, Fourth of July block bash as well. The next day, she took pictures of Heather's big family (her parents, as well as her brothers and their families), and then she shot Catherine's first birthday party that afternoon. We were blessed to have Heidi staying at our house during her visit, so any "down" time that we had (though there was still far too little!), she was chilling and chatting with me on the couch or over our computers.

(We were total geeks together, and it was great. At one point, Heidi remarked while sitting on my office floor, "You know, we live so far away from each other and never get to see one another, and yet, here we are - both sitting at computers and looking at our pictures together. I love it!" And she was so right and so true. She had taken over 1200 photos in her three days, and I had taken close to 800. We had a lot to "sift" through!)

Back to the topic at hand, though. I cannot WAIT to see more pics, and I was so giddy that I asked for permission to go ahead and share this first one. :-)

We received Jack's preschool graduation pictures today. I was standing there when they were taken, so I already knew they were good. Still, they were even more fabulous than I could have imagined:

My baby isn't really a baby anymore, is he?

I made a very late lunch of chicken pockets, black-eyed peas and peaches today. I picked out the smallest pocket for A.J. and gave him a tiny amount of peas and only a few slices of peaches. He's starving - poor kid - but I'm making him wait until 5:30pm before he can have anything else (about an hour and a half after eating). He's practically counting the minutes now, so I hope it's a good thing, and that his large appetite means he is over the barfing part.

The UPS website shows that my PartyLite candles arrived here in Omaha last night around 7pm. I don't know why they're not being delivered today, but it still shows that they are on schedule for Monday. *sigh* I suppose I can wait a few more days, seeing as how all the Gold Canyon stuff arrived yesterday anyway.

I cleaned and organized the fridge, throwing away some old food and such. I also rearranged and reorganized the spice cabinet. I'm still getting used to the different sizes and shapes of cabinets in this house, I think.

Since last night, we've done seven loads of laundry. That's a lot for us, as I usually try to do a load or two every other day, but I'd not done laundry since last Saturday. It evens out, I guess.

I'm thinking about dusting, but I'm also thinking about beginning to sort out which pictures/poses are going to certain folks. I want to make a trip to the post office on Tuesday, and it would be nice to have a substantial amount of pictures ready to mail out with the three boxes that I already have going out.

Heheh. It's 5:30 on the dot now (as I'm making my post), and A.J. just came in to ask me if he could eat another chicken pocket yet. He's so hungry, and I'm glad. :-)
navygreen: (PotC: Commodore - HOT!)
Yeehaw! All of our family professional pictures are now labeled! This is exciting news, as my right-hand pointer finger just informed me that he was walking out - leaving me cold - if he had to write even ONE more picture tonight.

So I told him that he could have a break for the rest of tonight, and tomorrow he can start labeling Philip's military pictures.

He wasn't pleased. In fact, he tried to get his buddy to give me the finger. :-/

...

In other news, I'm out of coupons. Since most flyers/circulars aren't forwarded on, we've run out of coupons. And apparently, the powers that mail coupons haven't really found us at our new address yet. It is weird to write out a grocery list and not have any coupons to sift through. I kinda miss 'em.

...

Philip wants to go see a movie tomorrow night. Our friend Ann has offered to babysit for us in return for a handful of playdates that Philip has had for Jack and Ty, and he wants to use the night to see a movie together. Poor thing - I thing he's hoping for a repeat performance of "movie madness" from our anniversary celebration. ;-) We're undecided on which film we might want to see *IF* we decide to go. I'm kinda leaning towards Pursuit of Happyness, though it riles my inner 'Grammar Police' self just to really think about that title and its [sic]ness. Other choices high on our list include: Smokin' Aces and Catch and Release. There are a few more that I'd like to see, but they look like chick flicks, mostly.
navygreen: (Button!)
taryns_mom Tina, thank you so much for the cute virtual gift of candy hearts on my userinfo page - tasty! I fear that I will eat them all too soon. ;-)

I've dropped off eleven sets of letters for the baptismal banners, and I fear that my fingertips will be permanently black.

I've labeled fully over half of our professional pictures now, and I fear that my hand is about to fall off.

...

I have a lot of fears, apparently.

I miss my little tree at the old house.

af_cop Philip had his pictures taken last week as well, the day after our family pictures were done. His mom and I like to have a current shot of him in his dress blues, and the most recent one of that style was taken in August 2003... so I think he was due for a new one, anyway. In his old picture, he had only nine decorations (ribbons), but he currently has sixteen!

Staff Sergeant Philip Cleghorn

For his two previous pictures, he was photographed in front of the traditional flag background. We shot that pose as normal, and that's what I ordered for everyone else. But for me, I fell in love with the one above on just the plain white background. It doesn't matter to me that you can't see his name, stripes, badge or even half of his decorations - he's just so dang cute!

But here are the rest, if you're curious. )

And we did hear a little good news today. Philip's departure date was changed from the 23rd to the 25th. An extra weekend! :-)

Torn.

navygreen: (Plan Ahead)
I love our new pictures, but I am highly unmotivated to go through them and write our names and the date on the back of each one. It will take me forever, and my hand will probably cramp a bazillion times. That doesn't sound like my idea of fun. However, I'm itching to start mailing them out, and I can't do that until they are labeled.

But then there's the fact that I need to make more little letters for the baptismal banners at church. I dropped off four sets to Ethel this week, but she called me in a panic on Thursday afternoon, telling me she'd had three more come up on the schedule right away. So I really need to get a few more sets to her tomorrow, I'm thinking.

And when I make these letters sets, it turns my fingertips completely and solidly black. The letters are so tiny that I have no other way to trace them without getting the ink all over my fingertips as well. And despite vigorous scrubbing (even with the rough side of a scrubby sponge), it takes about a day for the ink to wear off.

So if I work on some letters tonight, the earliest I can probably work on pictures without the worry of accidentally smearing them with some ink in the process will probably be very late tomorrow or Monday morning. And that means I can't begin mailing them out soon, either.

*sigh*

But I do realize what is more important. And Philip is wanting to watch a movie, and I can sit underneath the lamp and work on letters while we do that. So I guess my mind is made up by my mission, not my motivation.

*looks longingly at pictures, yet still walks away*
navygreen: (Boys: hug?)
My big plans for today? New family pictures! I'd been working for weeks to schedule an appointment for all of us to have pictures taken again before Philip leaves (the last time we had family pictures was two years ago, just before he left LAST time as well), and I'd had such trouble pinning down a time when we were all free. Or a time that wasn't on the weekend, as the photo place was booked solid on those "optimum" days, of course.

Finally I gave up on finding a time and instead made a time for it to work. Wednesday, February 7th at 10am. Back when I scheduled the appointment, Philip was to be on leave by then (which he is), and I marked both of us "off" on the calendar at Runza (which we were). I notified Jack's preschool on Monday last week that he'd be missing today in class, and I called A.J.'s school this morning to let them know of our plans.

As it turned out, A.J. needed to be out of school anyway. Philip had a mandatory Family Support Briefing for his deployment, and we all needed to attend. So we just made a day of it. :-)

We tried out a new studio, and it was a wonderful experience! I wore two different outfits, and Philip and the boys each wore three. We had a few of our own props, and the photographer was so friendly and nice. And she took 106 poses! She actually ran out of room on her first memory card and had to grab a spare - amazing! It took about 50 minutes to photograph the pictures, but then it took me almost an hour to pick through them all and order prints (there were so many!). But our gal was super nice, and the time seemed to zoom past. Philip and the boys walked over to a neighboring store in Village Point and rode a Ferris Wheel - an actual RIDE - inside the building... for only $1 each! They checked out GameStop as well, and finally came back to get me just as I was finishing up.

It took about 30 minutes for our portraits to print, but rather than wait inside the studio, we walked across the lane to eat at Cheeseburger in Paradise again (we've been there a handful of times before). Being already 12:30pm on a Wednesday afternoon in the snow, there wasn't a wait at all, and that was great. (We've waited over an hour there before.) We ate a nice lunch, and when we were finished, we picked up our portraits and came home.

Included in our package was a photo CD of proofs, though they are only low-resolution. Also, we have four 10x13 photo compilations that are amazing to see... but I've got no scanner here. You'll have to just take my word, I suppose.

I'm only including a sampling of the pictures - just the ones we ordered, and a few variations that didn't quite make the cut, but were funny/cute anyhow.

Cleghorn Family 2007.

As for the rest, onward to the pictures!

+29 more. )

navygreen: (Draco - share my pain)
Serious biz, I think my right hand is going to fall off. I've been sitting here for about two hours, labeling the backs of the pictures we picked up earlier today. I'm done now, but holy cow - owwie.

I've also kept the computer quite busy while I was working. [livejournal.com profile] hypnotiq and [livejournal.com profile] mionemione - be on the lookout for packages in the very near future! :-)
navygreen: (Kiki)
I can't believe we still have to wait eight more days before we can pick up our pictures - I'm dying for these like I've never waited for pictures before! And this is much faster service than it used to be, only eleven days from the day of taking to the pick-up date. Still, I'm so excited!

I've been spring cleaning like crazy today. I washed all the windows, put up new window clings, and I scrubbed the walls, doorframes and baseboards all over the house. I'm going to vacuum and mop all the floors tomorrow morning, as I want that freshly-mopped floor smell to still be hanging around the house at 6pm when Jan gets here to watch the boys. I'm making a pan of enchiladas for dinner, so all she'll have to do is pop that in the oven for dinner, along with some chips and salsa. The boys love enchiladas, so I'm sure they'll clean their plates for her, too.

I'm fixin' to attack my desk now so that I can dust the ceilings here in the office. Then I'll be able to wipe up anything that falls on the desk and get it all clean in here as well. Kiki is giving herself a bath on the seat next to me right now, so I guess we're all in the mood for a little spring cleaning. ;-) She went out with us for a while earlier today, and she munched on some nice grass in the yard.

Speaking of ceilings, just before the boys went to bed tonight, A.J. spotted a big black spider on the living room ceiling. It might have been in the house already, but I also had the living room windows, the office door, the front door and our bedroom windows open all day. In fact, it's been so nice that I haven't shut my bedroom window since I opened yesterday morning. The kitties enjoyed sleeping last night in the cool night breeze (we have a recliner right in front of our bedroom window, and they perch/sleep on that). I woke up to birdies chirping this morning - nice!

Some pictures from today. )

So, without further adieu, here are the birthday pictures for this year - A.J.'s 7-year and Jack's 4-year - how have my babies grown up so much?!

Jack and A.J.
Pose 1

(Of course, these are a bit blurry because they are saved from the the SEARS online galleries. The real ones never are, but these are always kinda crappy.)

10 more poses behind here! )
navygreen: (the 4th)
Things I bought include:
  • 30GB Photo iPod (for Philip)

  • leather flip-case with belt clip for the iPod (also for Philip)

  • 15pk. of DVD-R (so that our neighbor can make Philip copies of The Chappelle Show DVDs)

  • 50pk. of CDs (I have a lot I need to make photo-wise)

  • 5.8GHz cordless phone - two handsets - BOTH cordless (because we all know my current phones are CRAP)

  • a new computer mouse

  • extra color cartridge for the printer

  • an extra 128MB memory card for my digital camera (now I'll have 272MB available for use on our trip to Chicago)

  • a bag of SPREEs (Jack picked them out for Daddy - I didn't suggest it or anything - he just did it)

  • a new Scooby-Doo computer game (for A.J.)

  • a Dinotopia computer game (for Jack)

  • three flag-designed folding chairs in bag (for the party at hetterrific Heather's last night)

  • swim arm bands (for Jack, when we go back to starrchld Annie's pool)

  • gifts for some folks

  • 3 boxes of Starkiss from Dairy Queen® (red, white and blue ones to take to the party last night)

Now it's going to take me a decade to get all of our music into this thing for Philip. I'm not looking forward to that part. I purposely got the photo one as well - that way I can put all the good pics since he left in January on there, and he'll have them to keep (vs. looking at them on a public computer and not being able to keep or save them).

I also took the boys to SEARS to get their new birthday photos done. I try to do them in July so that I have the photos to send out by their birthdays in August. I'll put those up in a new post in just a bit. :-)
