Philip took the boys downtown to the arena last night for the Monster Truck Rally. I think they had a good time - they came home talking about mud, spinning tires, people getting stuck, rollbars crashing off, etc. Not only that, but next year, the boys want to ride in Philip's truck as he races through the mud at the event!

I'm glad they had a good ol' time, but that is sooooo not my kind of thing. I had a quiet girls' evening with my friend Tanya, and we watched Letters to Juliet and snuggled with kitties. It was my second time seeing it, but it was still just as cute.

Still, we didn't take pics of our night, but Philip did snap a few at the arena in downtown Minot:

I had spent the afternoon baking chocolate chip cookies per Philip's request, and then we delivered them to neighbors and friends. I have a full week of sugar cookies ahead of me this week, but I wanted to pop in. I did so well posting at the beginning of the year, but I've been too quiet the last two weeks... so much so that [livejournal.com profile] gardenmama even had to LJ "nudge" me! Thank you for that, C! :-)

Oh, last night was so wonderful! I can't believe so many turned out (10 ladies!), but I just had the best time with all my girlies. :-)

The eleven of us made a ruckus upstairs while the boys tore it up with their friend Payton downstairs. Tanya was on-top-of-things and thought to bring her blender over, too - it was much-needed and well-appreciated! Once everyone arrived, the two of us set to work making milkshakes for a crowd. We made vanilla, chocolate, "light" chocolate, and "Elvis" milkshakes between our two blenders. We used about six quarts of ice cream!

Since this was a "Girls' Popcorn Night," I had planned snacks accordingly. I made two large batches of caramel popcorn yesterday. I served one plain, but I drizzled the second batch with both dark and white chocolates. I made a batch of "Poppy Chow," substituting popcorn for the Chex cereal (the chocolate-peanut butter-powdered sugar mix), and I also served cheddar cheese popcorn (from this year's Boy Scout buy). We were all snacking so much I forgot to pop the regular buttered popcorn, even!

My friend Amber brought an amazing spinach-and-bacon dip, as well as homemade green salsa and chips. Jennie brought over some fabulous rice krispie treats, too. And two nights before, Tanya had helped me to make some popcorn-themed cake pops. We used my leftover crumbled Swiss chocolate cake and candy bar cream cheese frosting to combine them, and then we shaped them into tiny "buckets." I dipped them in in red candy melts, then painted white candy melt stripes on, and then topped them with a bunch of marshmallow popcorn that we made together as well.

They were very tasty, but they weren't so pretty, and we decided against a photoshoot! ;-)

Rebecca and Felecia ended up having to leave before we even got the movie queued up, but I was glad they both made it out for at least a couple hours. We watched Love & Other Drugs, and it was very, very good. It had a lot of really funny moments (I hadn't been expecting that), and of course, a lot of really great "eye candy" moments (I had definitely been expecting that!). We all enjoyed it a lot! Lynn, Victoria, Valeen had to leave at the halfway point (about midnight or so), and then Serina ended up leaving about thirty minutes later (her 5-month-old baby boy was beginning to get fussy, and she wanted to get him to bed). After the movie, Tanya had to split to wake early this morning for work, but Jan, Jennie, and Amber stayed and chatted for a while longer. They left close to 2am, and then I cleaned things up afterward. I was finally done at almost 2:30am!

It was so fun, and I'm so glad my friends ventured out in the cold/wind to come. I sure hope to plan another fun night in the future!

GPN!

I shouldn't be sitting here, updating right now. I really need to be flying to the commissary (so much faster than driving, ya know!) and grabbing the last-minute items for tonight.

Girls' Popcorn Night!

I can't wait!

Before all that goodness happens, I've also got to get the boys into town after school for their eye appointments and such. I'm thinking I might swing by Hobby Lobby as well and grab some of their popcorn-themed plates, too. :-)

I don't want to mess up my posting streak! :-)

Yesterday's post was locked, of course, but a big THANK YOU to everyone that is supporting me & my work all across the world. I can't possibly love you all more! ♥

The boys had their big bi-monthly sleepover last night. We had seven boys, ages 8-15, and they had a great time, I'm pretty sure. I finally went up to bed around 3:30am, and I heard the last bits of them still 15 minutes later. I'm sure all these guys go to bed early tonight! I made the giant Taco Bar instead of having pizza this time, and I also baked brownies. The kids all had ice cream with their brownies, but I thought mine was pretty rad just plain. ;-)

My friend Jennie dropped by last night, helping me out with a book she had found for me. She ended up chatting for almost an hour and a half... and I didn't realize her car was running all that time outside! I just love her to pieces, and it was so great to catch up with her.

I baked ahead last night too, making this morning's breakfast items. All I had to do this morning was reheat the muffins, and Philip served up milk and juice. Around 11am, parents started trickling in for their kids, and we enjoyed some visiting. The last boy left around 12:30pm, I think.

I'm heading out for a Girls' Night tonight at my pal Nicole's house, and I made Taco Dip and a cake to share. I spent the early afternoon frosting the cake (I baked the layers last night), and then I laid down for a nap before getting up, showering, and getting ready.

Well, my neighbor Tanya is here and ready to split for the party, so I'm off! :-)
navygreen: (Birthday!)
Whew! Today has been run-run-run, I swear! I worked on cookies until almost 7am this morning (after having a 2+ hour-long phone call between 1:30-3:30am!), and then I went to bed when Philip came home. At noon, I started shifting awake and got up to take pictures of the cookies.

(It's all about the cookie photoshoots, people. You know that by now.)

The cookies were for a birthday bash tonight. My friend Jennifer's 40th, and it was a surprise. It was snowing-and-blowing, so I got on the road extra early to make sure I beat the guest-of-honor to the restaurant. I also had to stop and get a card on the way, too. I tucked in a gift certificate to her fave coffee joint in her card, and I was signing it at the table just minutes before she arrived!

It was a wonderful time, and now I'm home, but just for a moment. I'm headed across the street for a late start into my neighbor Valeen's "girls night" now! What a crazy Saturday!

It's been a relatively lazy day around here. I went to bed at almost 7:30 this morning, when Philip came home from work. (Yes, I was awake all night. It's the new routine I'd gotten into over Christmas break, I think.) We both slept until 2pm, about the time A.J. was to be home. I showered and Philip shoveled snow. By the time we were finished, Jack was also home from school!

We headed to the commissary for a short list to round out the rest of this meal plan, and I also grabbed all the things for a craving: Italian noodle salad. I had it over the summer at a party, and I fell in love! I don't really remember exactly what was in it, so I did my best tonight trying to make it. I boiled pasta, chopped up a small jar of black olives and a tomato, diced 1/4 of a white onion, then bathed it all in Italian dressing. I put it in the fridge to marinade overnight, and I can't wait to dig in tomorrow for lunch.

Tonight's dinner was an easy one: BBQ Chicken Pitas, mixed vegetables, and pears. I sprinkled a tiny bit of mozzarella cheese over the succotash (sufferin'!) before serving, and it was a neat change. I already have tomorrow's main entree ready, too - a smaller lasagna that I made on Christmas Day with the larger one that I took to our dinner hosts. I had frozen the small one (unbaked), and I'll make a loaf of fresh garlic french bread to go with it tomorrow. It should be an easy dinner for Philip to handle on his own.

I put out the word last night for an impromptu girls' night to several friends. I'd been wanting to catch Burlesque, and it will be showing at the base theatre. I invited some gal pals to watch the movie with me, then head to J.R. Rockers for appetizers and drinks afterward. It should be fun, and there's a few of us lined up now, plus two more that will be joining just for the food later. I'm excited for a night of chit-chat!

I've been watching tons of chick flicks lately on Philip's nights of work. Last night, I watched Sweet November and The Truth About Love. He's home tonight, and we're about to finish up Repo Men (we watched half of it a few weeks ago, but the movie was messed up and we received a replacement disc today). Here's to the last bits of Friday night!
navygreen: (Zippy 2 Thunders)
On Saturday, the Zippys had plans to take on the town. It was so nice to get out with Heather for an afternoon - it's just something we don't do nearly as often as we should, anymore.

Where did we go? Well, first, she picked me up at the house (all my boys stayed home, giddy at the prospect of getting the oil changed in the car... okay, maybe not really giddy...). We had decided on WheatFields Bakery for lunch, and it was a wonderful choice! There was just so. much. good. food, and we didn't know where to begin. Heather finally settled on shrimp & cheese fondue, and I chose a chicken salad plate (because I wanted the pastry and fresh fruit that was to come with it). While we waited for our food in the very crowded little place (a sure sign of good eats!), we browsed over the delectable desserts. We were seated right in front of the bakery buns and pastries, and we walked over to see the cakes, mousses, cheesecakes, and cookies. Oh, I wanted one of everything!

Our food arrived, and it looked scrumptious. Heather's tealight burnt out shortly under her fondue pot, but the cheese stayed warm enough for her to dip her chunks of shrimp, veggies, and ciabatta bread cubes. My salad arrived, but... it didn't look right. Instead of a cold chicken salad plate with fruit and pastry, our waitress brought me a honey-fried chicken salad (a HUGE breast of honey-fried chicken, cut-up, and tossed over a bed of fresh greens, toasted hazelnuts, bacon, and shredded gruyere, served with a Creamy Ranch Herb Dressing). I was so hungry that I asked her to leave the salad instead of waiting for a correct one. It was so good! I typically don't like ranch dressing, but this one had a bit of a tangy kick, and it was PERFECT for blending with the sweet, honey-fried chicken (which was VERY sweet). Heather had a few bites of my salad and agreed. After our meals, we shared my pastry - a Shaggy. The 'Shaggy' was a large, fluffy croissant rolled in cinnamon-sugar and toasted almonds. It was delicious!

Even as Heather packed up the leftovers of her fondue (I didn't take my salad home, though there was half of it left), we remarked on how incredibly full we both were. We gazed some more at the desserts on our way out, only to learn a wondrous thing: they had free samples of many of the desserts at the counter! We both chose the Oregon Cherry cheesecake - a rich, pink cheesecake with swirls of cherry and a chocolate cookie crumb crust. It was the perfect amount of dessert, and we marveled that anyone could eat an actual slice at one time.

Then we rolled out the door and over to Heather's car. Honestly, it's a miracle that we still fit into our seats. ;-)

A short, pleasant drive later found us pulling into a parking spot on the Main Street of downtown Louisville, Nebraska. I grabbed my camera, and we headed into Coop-de-Ville for a chick-fest: a free chocolate buffet! Heather had received an invite earlier in the week from their mailing list, and that's how our entire girlie afternoon plans had begun. Of course, we were *so* full from Wheatfields that we weren't sure we could handle more chocolate... but a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do, right?

We browsed the super-fun rooms of massive girly decor, and we giggled over cute pillows and hilarious travel mugs. We mused over Christmas decorations (yes, in February!), and we pondered martini-shaped candles and redecorating our own homes with more pink and pizzazz. Finally, we entered Cafe Poulet for a bit of the festivities. Heather helped herself to a few pieces of chocolate, and I asked permission to take a few pictures. I also ordered a Pink Hot Chocolate before sitting down with my own chocolate spread: valentine M&Ms, a krispy chocolate bar, and a fudge brownie. When my hot chocolate arrived, it was covered in whipped cream and hot pink sprinkles... and it was definitely pink!

Neither of us could finish our goodies, but we leisurely enjoyed our time chatting as we tried to finish up. I burned my tongue on my first few sips of hot chocolate, but it was still so very good. We walked all around Cafe Poulet, and we entered the tiny bathroom together (not to use, silly!) just so we could laugh over the ornately decorated toilet seat and fun girl phrases pasted all over the walls. The pipes were even covered in hot pink fur!

We left Coop-de-Ville after I paid for my hot chocolate, and we walked a block up the street to enter Feathers. Feathers is a fun, hip, girly retail shop, and we laughed and giggled as we pored over the items in each room of the house (the shop is in a remodeled, older home). I ended up purchasing a few baby gifts while we browsed, but I resisted buying anything for myself (though the temptation was great, I promise you!). We ooooh'd and ahhhh'd over a great many things before finally stepping back out into the cold wind of Main Street and heading back to Heather's car.

There is one more shop related to the two we visited - Art Chicks - but both of us had been there previously, so we decided to head back home (a fun place for lunch, you are required to play 'dress-up' in their costume room before sitting down for your meal). We stopped at Baker's for Heather to grab some milk, and at Hallmark for me to pick up a few cards on the way home, and then she dropped me off. It was a very nice afternoon, and I'm so glad we got away. :-)

More pictures - beware of the pink! )

And though it was a quick turn-around (which is a good thing!), we also went out together on Wednesday night. I had given Heather tickets to see Phantom of the Opera at the Orpheum Theatre for Hanukkah, and it was an amazing show! We arrived early, and we both dressed up. In fact, if I'd worn black slacks, we'd have been twins! (Instead, I wore a red sweater, short black skirt, black tights, and strappy black heels.) I loved the show, and I'm glad I can now say that I've seen the off-Broadway production. It was really hard, however, not to burst out singing in so many of the songs. I resigned myself to trying to tap my heels quietly instead. ;-)

(Oh, but neither of us brought a camera to the play. Sorry!)

Oh, the night laughing! My cheeks hurt so much now, but it was soooo worth it! I'm glad I got to get away for an evening tonight, if only for a few hours. Laughing with Heather, Jamie, Janiece and a few others - amazing! They tell the BEST stories!

HAPPY CINCO de MAYO!

Wooo! *wipes tears* Tonight was another super-fun night out with the girlies. We maraca'd in the 5th of May right at midnight with a little Mexican food from the 24/7 Alverado's diner, followed by some dessert at IHOP and some sheer craziness (and videos!) at my house after that. My cheekbones are hurting SO BAD from all the laughing, and there are TONS of pictures (and movies!), but I'm going to leave it tonight at just this one.

Celebrate the day, folks!
navygreen: (Holiday Girl)
And late at night at that. Seriously, I can't even say we shouldn't be allowed together because we all drove our own cars. The agenda for tonight was some IHOP, some Wal*Mart and some Walgreens, and we were reckless, rowdy and having a right good time through it all.

I'm sure our waiter - the original Holiday - loved us. We left him a $15 tip on our $20-ish meal. :-)

The cast for tonight:
navygreen Holiday2 (myself)
hetterrific Holla-daysAsWell (Heather)
lilmissriss Christmas (Marissa)

Laughter was mandatory, breathing optional.
