(I need an updated usericon for A.J. Both of my current ones are several years old. *note to self*)

A.J. and Philip are at the Urgent Care Clinic right now. The boys were playing outside, in our yard, the neighbor's yard, and over at the park, and all was quiet. Philip was home from work and had fallen into a snooze on the couch. I had candles lit, and it was serene.

Then the garage door burst open, and a tearful, dirt-streaked A.J. hobbled in. He yelled for me, and as I entered the dining room, he was removing one of his shoes. His sock was soaked in blood, and he gulped as he told me that he'd stepped on a plank, sending a nail through his shoe and into his foot.

OUCH.

It was still bleeding heavily, so we applied pressure for a bit with the already-bloody sock. Philip woke up, ran into the dining room, assessed the situation, and then changed clothes to take A.J. in. I grabbed A.J.'s current shot records from his baby album, we wrapped paper towels around the puncture wound and carefully put his foot back into the bloody shoe, and then he limped out to the car with Dad.

His shots are current, so I don't know if he'll need a Tetanus shot or not (he's had several doses of DTaP). However, we can't properly clean a puncture wound like that, so it's just best to let the professionals do their job. They've been gone for over an hour now - hopefully they'll be back home soon.

I'm sure A.J.'s foot is going to be mighty sore the next day or so. Poor kid. :-(

I put half of a blue toothpick through my foot in the summer before my freshman year - yowzers!

For me, I can't watch those commercials with heating pads. Instantly, I'm like, "Hey, my back *does* hurt! I need those!"

So I get ya. ;-)

Ow, ow, ow! I've never punctured my foot on a nail, but I did do it with a toothpick, and it was wedged in there well for several minutes. I remember it being SO SORE the next few days.

That doesn't sound like too much fun. I hope the Urgent Care takes good care of him. I guess that's one way to get new shoe's :( Keep us posted !

The wait was forever long at the Urgent Care Clinic (ha!), so Philip got a referral to Alegent Health instead. About two hours later, and they were home - hobbling, with a prescription in hand, but otherwise just fine.

I did that when I was a kid too. And the parent's just soaked my foot in water and Epsom salt. Healed up just fine and dandy. I think your suppose to get a tetanus shot every 5-7 years?

A.J.'s good on his tetanus booster until he's eleven (a year and a half from now), and he was SO relieved not to have to get a shot as well. More pain? No thanks!

I did this when I was 9. I was too afraid to tell my mom because I was somewhere I was not supposed to be. It healed just fine but I'm sure I could have used a Tetanus shot though. My foot didn't bleed like A.J.'s did though. Actually, I don't think it bled at all.

That's how old he is - must be the age of not paying attention. ;-)

His bled quite a bit. He's got a quarter-sized blood-stained area in his shoe, and two even larger areas on his sock (which I just threw away now). I figure it's the pressure of walking on it that makes it bleed.

He must have hit at just the right spot because I just kept on playing where I wasn't supposed to be :P

Oh poor AJ! I hope it isn't too serious.

Nah, not too serious. Just a puncture wound, and you've got to keep an eye on those, so... that's what we'll do. ;-)

wow, I hope he feels better and gets it all cleaned up.

I stepped on a rusty nail while I was pregnant with Logan, back in June. It hurt like hell. :(

Luckily, this nail wasn't actually rusty, per se... just dirty (Jack led Philip outside to where the plank in question was, and he checked it out). Still, all those germies were then punctured into his foot, so he's got a script for antibiotics just in case.

Been there, done that, although mine wasn't nearly as bad as his sounds :(
I don't think he's old enough to have to worry about getting his tetanus shot updated, like I had to.

It wasn't really that bad, but it did bleed a lot more than I've seen my own puncture wounds do. It is right in the very center of the arch of his foot - ouch! And no, he didn't have to get a new shot. He's had five doses of DTaP in his nine years, and he's "good to go" until he's eleven.

Ouch!!!! It sounds like he handled it well too. *snuggles him*

Yep, he did. He hobbled and sniffled all the way back home; otherwise, we wouldn't have known he was hurt. It was bleeding all the way (I think the pressure of walking probably squeezed more blood out, actually), so he was a real trooper.

Poor Kid! I guess with boys blood is always a possibility. ;-)

I hope he feels better soon!

Definitely. With boys, blood is ALWAYS a big possibility. (Remember Jack's head incident this past summer?)

Ooo, that brings back painful memories. Yep, I did that. At about the same age AJ is. Only, it was summer, and I wasn't wearing any shoes.

Hope it heals quickly!

When I did it, I wasn't wearing shoes either. This was a persistent nail, to have gone through his shoe and sock. ;-)

I was at a friend's birthday party in either middle school or early high school, and I was barefoot in her backyard playing volleyball. Somehow, my foot managed to find a sharp, rusty pipe sticking out of the ground.

So oof...I have some inkling of his pain. I hope he'll be healed up and back to running around in no time (keeping his eyes out for nails, of course!).

Yeah, I punctured my foot in the summer before my freshman year of high school - it was NO fun. Gah, I was sore for days!

ouch
I stepped on a nail in '97 (I remember the year 'cause it was 10 years after I got my previous tetnus shot in basic training). But it didn't bleed as much as A.J.'s did and all I did was get a new tetanus shot the next day. I'm sure you've got lots of instructions from the hospital. Doubt they'd be able to clean it any more then you could, but they could give him antibiotics if it's that deep. (when I had a chair leg go through my finger nail they didn't even try to do anything. Just X-ray'd (bone was "squished"), splint, wrap and antibiotics.

Hope it missed the bones and is somewhere he can more easily avoid putting weight on for a while.

(You are just not old enough to throw around the dates and years that you do.)

Luckily, he didn't need a shot (more pain!), but they did take x-rays and give him antibiotics. I'm sure it will be sore this week.

no shot = good. My parents never remembered to bring shot records with, so I had WAY TOO MANY tetnus shots as a kid.

(I'm old. I just don't act my age. ;) )

Yep, he's all healed up now. Just a little dented area in his foot, but no worse for the wear. Thanks for thinking of him, Matt. :-)
