I watched the three children of a 'down-the-street' neighbor yesterday afternoon. I was really surprised to have a call from Shawna on my answering machine when we came home on Tuesday. I'd taken over some candles and baked goods at different times in the past years, but I'd really not talked to her since Halloween 2003. Even then, they had just moved into the area a few days before Halloween, and as I'd taken over welcoming cookies, I'd invited her family to our Halloween shindig. At the time, they had a newborn, an 18-month old and a 3-year old. Add almost 2 years to those ages and you can see what ages I had yesterday, plus she's due with a fourth baby in early October. They were wonderful kids, but it was a bit confusing to have a 'Jack' and a 'Jackie' in the same living room!

I didn't do much yesterday except immerse myself in The DaVinci Code. I realize that I'm behind the times in reading this book, but it was so good. I had never paid any attention to the hype before, but as I settled down to watch a movie a few nights ago, a preview for the upcoming movie version of the book piqued my interest (May 19, 2006!). Especially with big names like Tom Hanks and Ron Howards, I was really hooked. I found a website for the book, and I read the first 5 chapters online. Oh, it was so good! And I know that I still don't know much about the Church's history, nor would I ever be an expert on art history, but I swear I do feel like I know such a great deal more after reading this book, even if it is fiction.

I have an appointment with Dr. Jane Warren this afternoon at 2pm, and I'm taking the boys over to niecer1 Janiece's house to play while I'm gone. Then I'll pick them up and race to A.J.'s school - they're posting the classroom lists at 3:45pm today, and 'Meet the Teacher' time is then from 4-5pm. He then starts school on Monday!

I made a big pan of scalloped potatoes on Tuesday night, and I forgot how much it makes if you're not taking it to a function of some sort. The boys and I have eaten some for every meal since, but we've just passed the halfway mark of the 9x13 pan. Still, homemade scalloped potatoes are so worth the trouble. My mom used to make them for special occasions, and it feels "homey" to eat them.

The boys received a big box from Amazon.com last night. Inside was a gift-wrapped present from Uncle Chris and Aunt Amy - laser tag. They are so excited to play, but I only had 4 of the needed 12 AA batteries, so we're heading out to get some more soon. It is for their birthdays, of course, and it's a neat set that has different features for inside or outside play. I'm sure that Daddy will love playing with it as well. ;-)

I have no idea how to make scalloped potatoes. My mom always made them from a box!

I really liked The Da Vinci Code. You should read Angels and Demons next -- it's about electing a new pope, so it's pretty timely.

He's a very engaging writer. Dan Brown certainly managed to make something that I never thought I would be interested in... INTERESTING. I was already thinking about checking out his other book - do you know if it happens to come in a softcover version yet?

It's out in paperback here, but then again The Da Vinci Code has been out in paperback here for about a year.

Hmmm... according to Amazon, it is out in paperback. Good stuff.

I wouldn't consider The Davinci Code a reliable source of Church history.

If you want to learn about our ancient heritage, you might consider Church History in Plain Language by Bruce Shelley. Or if you REALLY want to get into it, first read the book of Acts, then check out the writings of the early church fathers like Justin Martyr, Origen and Clement of Rome.

There is much more to the story than a heretical 3rd century gnostic manuscript, which was never accepted by the church and which contradicted the teachings of Apostles, who were united in their efforts (except for occasional internal squabbles, which were openly documented and resolved).

I honestly don't think I could be interested in much of the Church's history - I only liked this story so much because of the thriller/detective aspect of it - that's my favorite genre in most anything. Still, under my little rock of the world, I'd never even heard a whisper of ANYONE believing in ANY thing like the "sacred feminine." It was an entirely new idea to me, and I was swept away just reading/hearing about, whether any of it is true or endorsed or not.

I was raised Baptist and am now Lutheran. The book doesn't change my ideals, but it was still very interesting.

One day, I'm going to get myself around to reading your book too, my dear. ;-)
