Today was the Easter Egg Hunt in base housing. It was to be held in the grassy field across the street from the privatization offices, and I knew there would be a large crowd. The event was supposed to start at 9am, but I wanted to make sure we were able to get a good parking spot (as we'd have to rush home and get Philip to work by 11), so we arrived at 8:35 - and we were the very first ones there! I made the boys stay on the sidewalk so that we wouldn't see too much that we weren't supposed to... yet. As a result, everyone else coming in stayed right there on the sidewalk with us.
There were activities set up at booths next to the hunting field. The boys chose to color a hard-boiled egg first. A.J. made a pretty blue egg, and Jack made a bright yellow egg. Next, we moved on to the Spoon Races. They were doing the races within certain age groups, but Jack just went on with A.J. instead, and that was fine. He still had fun, making it through in last place. The boys also participated in a Musical Chairs game for bunny cakes (elaborate, decorated entire cakes from Wal*Mart). Then we got in a long line to have animals made out of balloons by clowns. Both A.J. and Jack chose a dinosaur balloon. Though they might look the same, I've been informed that Jack's is a "brontosaurus," while A.J.'s is an "Apatosaurus." ;-)
Just after 10am, it was time for the Egg Hunt to begin. I directed the boys to the farthest edge of the field, hoping that the few kids on that end would mean Jack was less likely to get trampled. I'd given them instructions to stay together and to stop finding eggs when their baskets were full (so other kids could find lots as well). As it turned out, we'd lined up on the edge of the 7-12 age group's field, and I liked having Jack in the older group so that I could keep both boys in my sight at the same time. Soon, they were off! They both filled their baskets just as the last eggs were found, so that worked out perfectly.
They received another half-dozen eggs or so at the end of the event, as they were standing near the prize give-a-ways (there had been a few golden/silver eggs hidden), and the man giving out prizes gave them the last several eggs he found in the prize van. They were tickled about that, and then we headed back to the car. Once home, they rushed in and showed Dad their cool dinosaur balloons and baskets full of eggs. They took turns opening their eggs at the dining room table to see what candy surprises they'd earned, and I let them each have one piece. Once the candy was put away, the boys took turns hiding the eggs all over the living room for one another to find, and they're still doing that now - an hour later!
Fun times, and a gorgeous day. I only hope the weather is this beautiful when it is actually Easter!
