It is really difficult to explain AIDS/HIV to the boys when they're still not asking the actual sex questions. A.J. was asking about what HIV was tonight, and I explained that, "it's the virus that causes AIDS" - meaning, of course, that then I had to explain more fully what both diseases/conditions mean and entail. And then he wanted to know who has it, which led to discussing how to avoid it. And, well, HIV is a (mostly) sexually-transmitted disease... but he doesn't yet know what sex is.
(I realize it depends on what your definition of is is... [yeah, it had to be done]).
So it was hard to feel like I was getting through. We talked about closeness and kissing, about hygiene, and about not sharing needles (which was a whole 'nother explanation in itself, but since we've talked about drugs many times, that was just one more point I could use in that particular instance). We talked about the likelihood of any of his friends having HIV (not very likely), and I think that helped a bit? I dunno.
*sigh*
Sometimes I just don't know the right things to say. :-/
