[livejournal.com profile] catharin's "experiment."

I got such a kick out of this that I had to share. :-)

My friend [livejournal.com profile] catharin posted this a while ago, and I found it true and funny.
"What's your least favorite word? Mine would have to be "procedure," or "pus". The former has absolutely no positive denotations or connotations whatsoever, and the second is so accurately nasty-sounding, a perfect complement for the substance it embodies, that it resembles a swear word. Not even a swear word--worse! Much worse! Try it if you don't believe me. Say your favorite profanity aloud. Now say the word "pus" aloud.

...you winced, didn't you? You did. Because it's just that bad.

What's your least favorite word? I hear "moist" is exceptionally unpopular, particularly among women."

[identity profile] minivan-mom.livejournal.com 2006-07-13 06:38 pm (UTC)(link)
OMG~ *moist* is the ABSOLUTE worst word in my opinion. I cringe whenever I hear it. Ewwwww, yuck! I hate it. I knew I was going to answer with that word, even before I read it at the bottom! ;-)

I also hate to hear the word *panties*- especially when a guy says it. Ugh. We call them unders around here.

[identity profile] marshmelococoa.livejournal.com 2006-07-13 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I like panties. And even though it makes me think of the lacy, satiny, pretty kind, I even tell my son's to go retrieve their panties sometimes! LOL I dated a guy once who called them 'der-wear. I found that cute too.

[identity profile] navygreen.livejournal.com 2006-07-13 06:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I think we just call them "underwear" - mine and the boys. Philip's we call "boxers," of course. (Oh noes - TMI!)

[identity profile] marshmelococoa.livejournal.com 2006-07-13 06:45 pm (UTC)(link)
boxers is way better than tighty whities!

[identity profile] navygreen.livejournal.com 2006-07-13 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
No kidding!

[identity profile] navygreen.livejournal.com 2006-07-13 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't get the "moist" thing. The word has just never bothered me much. "Crusty," on the other hand, was spoiled for me by my older sister when I was in junior high school or so. Ewwww!

[identity profile] marshmelococoa.livejournal.com 2006-07-13 06:44 pm (UTC)(link)
EW!!!!!!!!!!!

[identity profile] taryns-mom.livejournal.com 2006-07-13 07:30 pm (UTC)(link)
LOLOL... ok, I've just had my first true belly laugh of the day.... that just cracks me up!

[identity profile] shark-girl.livejournal.com 2006-07-14 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with panties. Here in Oz we say undies or knickers. I dont know anyone that says panties except on tv

[identity profile] marshmelococoa.livejournal.com 2006-07-13 06:43 pm (UTC)(link)
If you mention the word "itch", then I really do. That is one word that is never good either. And sometimes an itch even is correlated with a SCAB and sometimes even PUS!! I suppose an itch could even be moist, if you do it enough to bring on the pus which will lead to a scab.

YUCK.

[identity profile] navygreen.livejournal.com 2006-07-13 06:45 pm (UTC)(link)
One mention of "itch" is okay, but if we were to keep going on about it, then I have to start scratching too!

[identity profile] marshmelococoa.livejournal.com 2006-07-13 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Then we should definitely not have a discussion about fleas or ticks.

[identity profile] navygreen.livejournal.com 2006-07-13 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL.

[identity profile] kitangel.livejournal.com 2006-07-14 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
Yah.. and so now I find myself scratching for no apparent reason. LOL Thanx.

[identity profile] marshmelococoa.livejournal.com 2006-07-14 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
You're welcome. LOL

[identity profile] kataclysmic.livejournal.com 2006-07-13 06:50 pm (UTC)(link)
"Moist" freaks a lot of my female friends out, but I kind of equate it with really fresh, warm cookies that are still a little doughie on the inside... yum!

[identity profile] navygreen.livejournal.com 2006-07-13 06:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's me too. I really only think of yummy baked cakes and cookies. :-)

[identity profile] dottey.livejournal.com 2006-07-13 06:51 pm (UTC)(link)
"procedure" isn't bad for me. We write down technical documentation all the time at work. Just documenting our procedures.

Come on... No moist brownies? They're delicious!

[identity profile] navygreen.livejournal.com 2006-07-13 06:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I've got some really moist brownies on the counter right now that I baked for dessert last night. :-)

[identity profile] taryns-mom.livejournal.com 2006-07-13 07:32 pm (UTC)(link)
What's your least favorite word? I hear "moist" is exceptionally unpopular, particularly among women."

That just cracks me up (along with the crusty thing)... "moist" can be a positive thing in a female context... *nudge nudge wink wink*

But "pus" - hands down, grossest word I can think of at the moment. Are we noticing many of these words have some sort of bodily function?

[identity profile] navygreen.livejournal.com 2006-07-13 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Bodily function words ARE gross, no question!

[identity profile] kristchan.livejournal.com 2006-07-13 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I love saying "spatula". Say it outloud. It's fun.

and "scirocco". that's hot.

[identity profile] navygreen.livejournal.com 2006-07-13 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I really love saying "dollop." :-)

quote trigger!

[identity profile] redwink.livejournal.com 2006-07-14 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
What better way to say, "I love you," than with a gift of a spatula?

[identity profile] donnazita.livejournal.com 2006-07-13 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I equate "moist" with brownies and cakes as well, so it doesn't bother me.

I probably have at least several words I dislike but the only one I can think of right now is "smear."

Btw...off topic...I was in a scrapbooking store today and I saw Disney "Cars" stickers...really nice ones.

[identity profile] navygreen.livejournal.com 2006-07-13 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I bought these stickers last week. They also had a large versions of Lightning and Mater, but I decided against them. Since A.J. is having a Cars-themed party this year, I was sure I'd be able to use them.

[identity profile] niecer1.livejournal.com 2006-07-14 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Nasal.
I just hate the visual of the word, they way it sounds....oh and
scab..
That just makes me queasy...
OH!
That is another word..queasy.

[identity profile] kitangel.livejournal.com 2006-07-14 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
Mine is the word... puke. Of course you would have to hear how my son Tristan says it to fully appreciate why I hate it so much. It's the only word that he enunciates so much that he actually makes you think he's going to puke. LOL

[identity profile] roseblessing.livejournal.com 2006-07-14 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
I'm just laughing at all you guys.

[identity profile] theswedishchef.livejournal.com 2006-07-14 02:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Mucus- Oh mostcurious.... you beat me to it. But the other word that really bothers me is:
SMEGMA- YUCK YUCK YUCK!!

My sister hates Moist and any form of it. She cringes when the weatherman mentions moisture or a commercial says moisturize!
